Plot locations and boundaries
If you open the Map Search screen — or a dialog which includes a map — while you are working on an application, worksheet, or other record, you may be able to use the map tools to plot the location or boundary of the premises, site, or area to which it relates. This geometry data, as well as an image of the annotated map, can then be saved with the record.
The PLOTTED BOUNDARY INFO panel, if present, shows summary information taken from the record.
If a premises has an address and coordinates in the gazetteer, the map may already show a pin at that location. This pin is a map feature — it is not included in the geometry but is included in the map image.
Tip
These same map tools are available elsewhere in ASSURE whenever there is a need to plot a location or draw a boundary.
Plotting locations
-
Click the
tool.
-
Click the map at the desired locations.
-
Click
when you are finished. -
Click
to save.
Drawing polygonal boundaries
A drawn boundary may consist of multiple shapes — adjacent, separate or overlapping.
-
Click the
tool.
-
If available, click the
tool to enable the snap-to-boundary function.
-
Click the map at the vertices of the boundary.
Click
or if you make a mistake. Click to start again. -
At the last vertex, click
or simply double-click.ASSURE automatically closes the boundary.
-
To combine multiple shapes into one geometry, right-click each one and choose Select, then click the
tool.
-
Click
to save.
You can also draw linear,
rectangular, and
circular, boundaries, but these are uncommon.
Tip
If snapping is enabled, the tool has an mode. Instead of having to click each vertex along a path, you can simply click two points and the closest feature boundary between those two points is selected automatically. You can keep doing this until the boundary is completed. This is particularly useful when plotting curved boundaries.
Using topographical features to define a boundary
Topographical features, if available, can be used instead of, or in combination with, drawn shapes.
-
Click the
tool.
-
Click a feature, then right-click it and choose Select.
Repeat as required. The features do not have to be adjacent.
-
When you have finished, click the
tool to combine them.
-
Click
to save.
Editing a drawn boundary
-
Click the
tool.
The vertices of all drawn shapes become editable by dragging, and new vertices can be added.
-
Click
or when you are finished.
You can also drag whole shapes around by using the tool.
Copying a boundary
This is currently possible only for Land & Property applications.
-
Right-click on the boundary, and choose Select.
-
Right-click again, and choose either Copy or Copy To.
-
Copy simply copies the geometry so that it can be pasted into this or (usefully) another open Map Search screen by a right-click menu Paste command.
-
Copy To opens a Copy Geometry dialog in which the you can specify another L&P application to which the geometry will be copied.
-
Removing markers and boundaries
-
Click the
tool.
-
Click on each of the markers or shapes that you want to remove.
-
Click
or when you are finished.
Printing the map at the current scale
-
Click the
tool.
-
Click
or .A Print dialog opens, with a preview of the map.
Usually, whenever the Map Search screen is opened in the context of a particular application, its Application Number (or equivalent reference) and Address (site address) are also printed below the map.
Optionally, a system administrator can configure a map print template for each type of L&P application. A template can include static text, but also variables merged from the application's reporting fields. The template can either be appended to the standard Application Number and Address, or replace them.
Note
The Enable Features and
Enable Snapping tools are activated separately and are currently supported only for ASSURE Land & Property.
